In choosing a college, consider the quality of available mental health services. Some colleges provide very limited mental health services. Consider whether: there are both therapists and psychiatrists on staff, there is a cap on the number of appointments, there is the recommended ratio of 1 professional staff to every 1000 or 1500 students, services are available after-hours, there is wait for appointments, there is a fee for services.

Additional considerations in choosing a #college: do students who seek mental health treatment get placed on leave of absence?

Campus counseling centers provide a very valuable service.  In selecting college, in addition to considering the quality of those services, you may want to inquire under what circumstances the counseling center discloses information to the school administration if a student has suicidal thoughts or has thoughts of hurting him- or herself.  Some school policies require students who disclose self-injurious thoughts or acts to sign post -hospitalization contracts, behavior contracts, or take voluntary or involuntary leaves of absence.  Many require students who have been hospitalized to be cleared by the counseling center before they can return to classes or live on campus.  Ask potential colleges about their policies and practices, codes of conduct and residence hall contracts so you can make an informed decision.
